The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical
Modifications (ICD10CM) is updated April 1st and October 1 st every year. These
updates provide opportunities to review the current HIPAA mandated diagnosis
coding guidelines, encourage team members to update the accuracy of
patient’s chronic problem list and determine necessary educational
opportunities for the entire team
This April 2023 update includes 42 additions, 7 deletions and 1 revision, leaving the ICD10CM
code set to include 73,674 codes in all.
Although officially housed on at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), current
ICD10CM codes and updates can also be found at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid
Services (CMS). The updated guidelines can be accessed and downloaded from either of these
sources for your reference.
Out of the 42 additions, 12 are new financial abuse codes, 15 are due to neglect/maltreatment
and 15 new Z codes, including, extended specificity options for items such as, inadequate
housing and noncompliance with medication due to financial difficulties.
