The 2027 ICD-10-CM Code Set Is Here: What Should Your Team Do Now?

For many healthcare organizations, October 1 is approaching at a time when there is already plenty competing for attention. Reimbursement pressures, changing requirements, staffing challenges, technology updates, and ongoing compliance demands can make another annual code-set update feel like just one more item on an already crowded to-do list.

But the FY 2027 ICD-10-CM update should be more than a file-load exercise.

The new code set takes effect October 1, 2026, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released the FY 2027 code files, including the code tables and index, addenda, conversion table, and Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. The FY 2027 codes apply to services provided from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.

So, what should your organization be doing now?

Review the FY 2027 changes and identify those that could affect your organization’s services, documentation, coding, and workflows. Don’t overlook the Official Guidelines. A new code may look straightforward until the applicable guideline changes how it should be assigned or reported.

The code set needs to be reflected throughout the systems and tools used to capture and report diagnoses. Confirm that your EHR, encoder, coding references, superbills, and charge-capture tools are ready for FY 2027. Identify outdated or deleted codes before they become an operational problem.

If a code change affects documentation, code selection, or reporting, determine whether internal policies, procedures, reference materials, or workflows need to change as well. This is also a good opportunity to identify areas where staff have been relying on outdated guidance or inconsistent processes.

Coders may lead the implementation, but they are not the only people who need to understand relevant changes. Depending on the services your organization provides, billers, clinical documentation staff, providers, and other revenue-cycle team members may need targeted education.

A successful transition should have an owner and a timeline that moves through review, assessment, system updates, testing, education, and monitoring.

October 1 is the implementation date. It should not be the date your organization starts preparing.
