If your FQHC isn’t already participating in NACHC’s F.A.S.T. (Federal Affairs Strategic Team) monthly calls, now is a great time to get on board. These sessions are led by trusted experts who track developments in Washington that directly impact Community Health Centers (CHCs).
This month’s call highlighted a significant policy shift: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are now being interpreted by HHS as a provider of Federal Public Benefits (FPBs). As a result, FQHCs may become subject to a range of longstanding FPB rules—some of which date back nearly three decades and have been interpreted differently across administrations.
The most pressing question raised by this change is whether immigration status verification will become the responsibility of the CHC. While HHS has acknowledged the lack of clear, up-to-date guidance, officials stated that clarification on this issue is forthcoming.
In the meantime, the recommendation is clear: don’t panic. Stay informed, monitor for updates, and begin thinking strategically about how your organization might respond to various potential outcomes. A proactive plan will position FQHCs more effectively than waiting to react after policy changes are finalized.
